RN Soccer Sixes 2011 – Match Report

For the first time in our history, a Scout team from 2nd Warwick returned victorious having won the Royal Naval Soccer Penalty Shoot outSixes Cup.

After an absence of a year whilst the Scouts ship, HMS Bristol was in for re-fit, the RN Soccer Sixes were back on again for an action packed weekend of football at HM Naval Base, Portsmouth. This year's competition, involved 22 RN Recognised Sea Scout Teams and 18 Explorer Teams from around the country.

2nd Warwick Scout and Explorer teams were there in force, and each competed in their respective competitions.  The players were

Scouts – George P, Jonny H, Sam S, Lewis J, Owen M and Ethan H

Explorers – Joe B, Joe M, Ed H, Zak H, Oscar M, Toby M and Tom O.

The competition involved two group rounds of around 6 matches each, played on the Saturday.  During the morning, team compete to decide if they are eligible to play in the Cup competition, as either winners or runners up from their group.  Those teams who don’t make it get to play in the Plate competition.

In their group, the Scout team drew 3 games, and won two.  The Explorer team won one game and drew three; which was enough to see both teams through to their respective Cup Competitions.

During the afternoon teams are re-grouped for round two with other teams competing for the Cup and the converted semi-final places.  Both teams were successful, the Scout team winning their Group with a full 12 points from their 3 matches.

After the RN Soccer Sixes Penalty Shootout6-a-side football competition during the day, on Saturday evening all 240 young people plus leaders met in the Royal Navy drill shed for a range of activities before returning to the Type 82 Destroyer HMS Bristol for a good rest

Sunday morning started with a penalty competition, before commencing with the semi finals.  The Explorer game was particularly hard fought against an unbeaten Colchester.  A draw after extra time, and then penalties, the game went to ‘sudden death’ penalties, with Colchester getting the result.

Picking themselves up, the Explorer team were successful in beating Hamble in another game that went to penalties, to take the third place prize

In their semis, the Scout team beat Surbiton 1-0 to gain a place in the finals against Lymington.  Although boosted by an earlier win over Lymington, the final was a much tougher game, but calm nerves and a strategy of playing the ball deep in the opponent’s half, saw 2nd Warwick take the Cup with a 2-0 win.Presentation

This was the first time a Warwick team has won the Cup, although past Explorer teams have won their plate competition.

It was a real pleasure for the Leaders to take the teams down to Portsmouth, and both the
Scouts and Explorers were excellent company and all got on very well together.

Many thanks to those who spent their sunday in the sun building the new rover store, not quite finished yet but by next weekend it should be fully water tight and provide much better protection to the boats.

The New Rover store

We have had fantastic results for both the Scout and Explorer teams at this weekend’s RN Soccer Sixes which was played in a sizzling heat and bright sunshine.
The Scout team won the Cup competition for the first time; beating Lymington 2-0 in the final.  They played the whole weekend without loosing a game, and only conceded one goal in their draw with 2nd Deal.
The Explorer competition was fiercely contested. In the semi finals, after ending 0-0 after extra time with Colchester and drawing on penalties, the team were unlucky to loose out on a sudden death penalty shoot out.  (Colchester went on to win the Explorer Cup)
However picking themselves up, the team successfully beat Hamble 3-1 on penalties to come away with the third place prize.
The teams really got on well together and both Scouts and Explorers enthusiastically supported  each others games.  As always, it was a real pleasure to take them away with us and Terry and I were very proud of their achievements and conduct over the weekend
Well done to the lads!

(PS A big thank you to Annie, Barbie, Pete and Gary for their hard work on the support team)

A Huge well done to all those who took part in what by all accounts was a very tough weekends racing.

Same again next year smiley The full results can be found here
