Here are a few more details about our proposal for our new HQ on the Banks of the river Avon in Warwick

"2nd Warwick Sea Scout Group has been established for over 50 years, and with over 200 members, is now more popular than ever. Young people from the ages of 6 to 18 years are taking part 5 nights a week, and we also run activities most weekends.

Sadly our current headquarters in St Nicholas Park, Warwick is now showing signs of it's age, it is too small, and woefully inadequate to meet the standards of the 21st century.

We therefore need your support to help us realise our plans for a new home, and enable us to offer more places and a better chance for some of the 175 young people on our waiting list to join in"

Q&A

Q. I support the idea of a new hut, but isnt there anywhere else it could go?

A. Unfortunatly we are constrained on this problem for a number of reasons :

  • We need to be in the same area of Warwick to maintain continuity and the catchment area.
  • We need access to the river and be close to the boat compound.
  • Easy access to roads for access with trailers etc.

Q. I saw the picture in the paper of the proposed new building, couldn't you make it fit in better?

A. Unfortunatly this was a mockup done by someone who is oposed to the new building, and we agree is not attractive. We have spend some time choosing design features and materials that would suit the area better.

Q. Is the new Building a joint venture with a commercial organisation or conference centre?

A. No we just need the new facilities to continue the work we are doing  and take more young people

Q. Won't the new building take up valuable space in the park?

A. Yes and no, we currently have two buildings in the park this will allow us to consolidate into one building (in a different place as we cannot rebuild on the current site due to the floodplane among other problems).

Q. Wont the new building spoil the look of the park?

A. We really hope not, our current building despite or best efforts is falling down around us and is a blot on the landscape of the eastern end of the park, we hope that the new building will be built as far as possible to blend into the area including using a natural dip in the ground to lower its profile.

Q. and need lots of trees removed?

A. No the trees are staying and the ones along the river bank, as we have use of the Old Warwick Sailing Club for launching boats so there is no need to build additional jetties and slipways.

Q. With 160 extra people visiting that area of the park won't it cause a lot of extra traffic?

A. We believe not for a number of reasons:

  • There are usually only 20-60 young people in the building at one time, as different sections meet on different evenings.
  • The sections meet outside of the heavy traffic caused by the schools on Myton road so would not make this worse.
  • Most importantly the new building has a secure compound where bikes can be stored, encouraging both adults and children to ride to scouts, at the moment the bike rack provided by the council for the eastern end of the park is designed for 4-6 bikes and we have had at least 2 bikes stolen from it in the last 12 months and many others tampered with which puts people off riding.
